Introduction
If you're applying to study Medicine or Dentistry at a UK university in 2027, the UCAT is one of the very first things you need to sort — and it all starts with getting registered and booked in the right window. 📅
Miss a deadline, and you're looking at a whole extra year before you can apply. The good news is that the process itself is not complicated. But the dates are strict, the slots fill up fast, and there's no flexibility once you've missed a cut-off. The UCAT Consortium is clear on this: claims of mitigating circumstances or technical errors will not be accepted.
This guide pulls together everything you need to know about UCAT 2026 registration and booking, using official information straight from the UCAT Consortium. From who needs to sit it, to exactly how to secure your slot — it's all here.
What Is the UCAT and Who Needs to Sit It?
The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is a computer-based admissions test used by a consortium of UK and international universities to help select applicants for Medicine, Dentistry, and other clinical degree programmes. It's sat in Pearson VUE test centres across the UK and in over 130 countries worldwide.
Around 37,000 candidates sit the UCAT each year. If you're applying to any UCAT consortium university for 2027 entry (or deferred entry in 2028), you'll need to sit the UCAT 2026 — the test window running from 13 July to 24 September 2026.
Which Universities Require the UCAT?
The UCAT is required by a large consortium of UK universities, including — but not limited to — the University of Edinburgh, King's College London, the University of Manchester, Cardiff University, the University of Glasgow, the University of Sheffield, and the University of Nottingham. International partner universities, including Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore, also require the UCAT (not the UCAT ANZ) for 2027 entry.
The full and up-to-date list of consortium universities is available at ucat.ac.uk/about-ucat/universities. Always check this before assuming you need the UCAT — not every medical school uses it.
Do I Need the UCAT or the UCAT ANZ?
If you're only applying to UK universities, sit the UCAT. If you're also applying to universities in Australia or New Zealand, you should sit the UCAT ANZ instead — Australian and New Zealand universities only accept UCAT ANZ results, and you cannot sit both in the same year. Doing so is treated as misconduct, and all results may be withdrawn.

UCAT Eligibility: Who Can Sit the 2026 Test?
The Basic Rule
You need to sit the UCAT 2026 if you're intending to apply to a UCAT consortium university for entry in 2027 (or deferred entry in 2028). There are no general exemptions from the test, and universities expect all applicants to take it — including EU and international candidates, even if that means travelling to a test centre in another country.
Can You Sit the UCAT More Than Once?
You may only sit the UCAT once per testing year. Booking and sitting the test more than once in the same year is treated as misconduct. However, there is no penalty for sitting the UCAT again in a future year — for example, if you're reapplying after an unsuccessful cycle.
Should You Sit It Early as a Practice Run?
No — and the UCAT Consortium specifically advises against this. Test content and scoring can change each year, your mindset during a 'practice run' would be entirely different, and you'd be taking up a slot that a genuine applicant needs. UCAT analyses registration data and may take action if a candidate appears to have sat the test as a practice run.
Who Is NOT Eligible to Sit?
Individuals with a professional affiliation to a UCAT coaching business — for example, as a tutor, content developer, or someone with a financial interest — are not eligible to sit the UCAT. The Consortium carries out checks and may cancel tests booked by ineligible candidates.
What You'll Need Before You Register
Before you head to the UCAT website, get a few things ready. 📋
1. A Valid Email Address
You'll create a Pearson VUE account using your email. Everything — confirmations, updates, reminders — comes here. Use one you check regularly.
2. Your Full Legal Name and Personal Details
Your name must exactly match your photo ID. Discrepancies between your registration details and your ID on test day can cause serious problems.
3. Valid Photo ID 🪪
On test day, you must present one of the following:
A valid passport
A national identity card (EU/EEA candidates)
A valid UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional)
School ID, library cards, and bank cards are not accepted. Check your ID is valid now — if your passport is expiring, get it renewed well ahead of your test date.
4. A Debit or Credit Card
The test fee is payable at the time of booking. There's no option to pay later.
How Much Does the UCAT 2026 Cost?
The official UCAT 2026 test fees confirmed by the Consortium are:
💷 £70 — for tests taken in the UK 💷 £115 — for tests taken outside the UK
Payment is made by major debit or credit card at the time of booking.
The UCAT Bursary Scheme 💛
If the registration fee is a financial barrier, the UCAT Bursary Scheme is open to eligible UK candidates. Applications for the 2026 Bursary open in May 2026 alongside registration.
To qualify, you must meet at least one of the following criteria and provide supporting evidence:
Free School Meals — an official letter from your school/college confirming you currently receive FSM (Local Authority funded) for 2024/25 or 2025/26
16 to 19 Bursary (England) or EMA (Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) — your official award letter for 2024/25 or 2025/26
Learner Support (FE 19+) or equivalent — your official award letter for 2024/25 or 2025/26
Undergraduate Student Finance maintenance award (full rate) — your award letter for 2024/25 or 2025/26
Universal Credit — one Universal Credit statement dated within the last 3 months (for you or a parent/guardian living at the same address)
Income Support, JSA, or ESA — an award letter from a UK Jobcentre Plus dated 2025 (income-based benefit only)
Asylum Support — an official award letter dated within the last 12 months
Important things to know about the bursary:
You must apply before booking your test. You cannot claim the bursary after payment.
You are only permitted one bursary voucher per test cycle.
If you miss your test after booking with a bursary voucher (a 'no-show'), UCAT will not issue a second voucher to cover the cost of rebooking.
Your bursary status is flagged to universities when results are sent — but this will not disadvantage your application. Some universities use this information to identify candidates from underrepresented backgrounds.
The following are not accepted as evidence: scholarships or bursaries from independent/fee-paying schools, postgraduate loans, Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Child Benefit, PIP, or a P60.
Step-by-Step: How to Register and Book the UCAT 2026
Here's the full process, in order. 🗺️
Step 1 — Wait for Registration to Open (12 May 2026)
Registration opens at 09:30 UK Time on 12 May 2026. Before this date, you cannot create an account or submit any applications. Mark it in your diary now.
Step 2 — Create Your Pearson VUE Account
Go to ucat.ac.uk and follow the link to the Pearson VUE portal. You'll create an account using your email address and personal details. If you already have a Pearson VUE account from a previous exam, you can use the same login — but double-check all your details are current and correct.
Step 3 — Apply for Access Arrangements (If Applicable)
If you have a disability, learning difficulty, or other condition that requires additional support, submit your access arrangement application before booking your test. Applications open on 12 May 2026, and the deadline is 10 September 2026 at 15:00 UK Time. Approval must come through before you can book. More on access arrangements below.
Step 4 — Apply for the Bursary (If Eligible)
Do this before you book and pay. Apply through your UCAT account once registration is open. You'll need to upload supporting evidence. Once your bursary voucher is approved, it's used in place of payment at the booking stage. Remember: one voucher per candidate, and it cannot be reissued if you miss your test.
Step 5 — Book Your Test from 23 June 2026
Booking opens at 06:00 UK Time on 23 June 2026. This is when you select your test date and test centre. Popular slots — especially in major cities — fill up very quickly. The UCAT Consortium advises booking well in advance of your preferred date, ideally at least 10 working days before you plan to sit the test.
Use the Pearson VUE Test Centre Locator (available via ucat.ac.uk) to find your nearest centre. The UCAT is delivered across the UK and in over 130 countries.
Step 6 — Pay and Confirm
Once you've selected your slot, pay the test fee (£70 for UK centres) by debit or credit card — or apply your bursary voucher code. You'll receive a booking confirmation email. Save it. It contains your appointment details, test centre address, and what to bring.
Choosing the Right Test Date
This is one of the most important decisions in the whole process. A few things to consider:
📚 Give yourself adequate preparation time. Don't book for the very first available slot if you haven't started revising. Equally, don't put it off so long that you risk missing the booking deadline.
🏃 Book early. Test centres in cities fill up fast once booking opens on 23 June. If you want a specific location or time, be ready to book as close to 06:00 on 23 June as possible.
🔁 You only get one attempt. There's no resit within the same cycle. Your performance on this one sitting will be the score on your application.
📅 Don't book too late. If you book a test date close to the 24 September deadline and then encounter a problem, you may not be able to rebook within the testing window.
A sensible strategy for most candidates is to aim for a date in July or early August — this leaves enough preparation time after booking opens, gives you the option to reschedule if necessary, and ensures your score is available well before you finalise your UCAS application.
UCAT Access Arrangements: Support for Additional Needs
Access arrangements are available for candidates with disabilities, learning difficulties, or other conditions — including dyslexia, ADHD, visual impairments, and physical disabilities. Applications open on 12 May 2026 and must be submitted by 10 September 2026 at 15:00 UK Time.
Types of Access Arrangements Available
UCATSEN — 25% extra time across all subtests
UCATSEN + rest breaks — 25% extra time plus 5 minutes of rest before each section
UCATSEN + rest breaks (50% extra time) — for candidates who normally receive 50% additional time
Other accommodations such as coloured overlays, enlarged text, or the use of assistive technology
How to Apply
Apply through your UCAT account from 12 May. You will need to provide supporting evidence — such as an Educational Psychologist's report or a letter from a medical professional — and wait for approval before booking your test. Do not book a standard test slot before your access arrangement is confirmed, as changing between test versions requires cancelling and rebooking under the correct arrangement type.
For candidates with an approved access arrangement who need to reschedule or cancel, you cannot do this online — you must call Pearson VUE Customer Services directly on +44 (0)208 616 5106 (Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00 UK time).
Rescheduling and Cancelling Your UCAT Booking
Life sometimes gets in the way. Here's how the UCAT Consortium's reschedule and cancellation policy works:
Rescheduling
You can reschedule your test online through your UCAT account, subject to availability. You must give at least 24 hours' notice — if you do not, you will lose your fee and be treated as a no-show. Once you've selected a new appointment, you must complete all steps before the reschedule is confirmed; if you don't receive a confirmation email, it has not gone thr’t gone through.
After the booking deadline (16 September 2026), you cannot reschedule online and must call Pearson VUE Customer Services, still giving the required 24 hours' notice.
Cancellation
Cancellations must also be made with at least 24 hours' notice via your UCAT account (or by phone after the booking deadline). If you cancel in time, you'll receive a refund — typically within 10 working days, depending on your card issuer.
Missing Your Test (No-Show)
If you miss your appointment without giving the required notice, you will not receive a refund or a free reschedule. This applies regardless of the reason — including illness, transport problems, or arriving without a valid ID. You can book another appointment, but you will need to pay the full test fee again. This also applies to bursary candidates; no second voucher will be issued.
Common Mistakes That Derail UCAT Registration and Booking ⚠️
Most of the issues that arise during UCAT registration are entirely avoidable. Here are the highest-impact failures candidates make — and exactly how to sidestep them.
Name and ID Mismatches
Your registered name must match your photo ID exactly. This is one of the most common causes of problems on test day, and it's completely preventable. If you're unsure whether your name on file matches your ID — for example, if you've recently changed your name, or if your passport shows a slightly different version of your name — contact Pearson VUE in advance. Don't leave this until the week before your test; corrections and clarifications take time to process.
Arriving Without a Valid ID
If you turn up at the test centre without permitted photo ID, you will not be allowed to sit the test, and your fee will not be refunded. The no-show policy applies in full. Permitted ID is a valid passport, a national identity card (EU/EEA candidates), or a valid UK photocard driving licence. Nothing else is accepted. Check your ID is current, in date, and matches your registration details well before test day — and if you have any doubt, contact Pearson VUE ahead of your appointment.
Creating Multiple Accounts
If you sat the UCAT in a previous year, you already have a Pearson VUE account. Use it. The UCAT Consortium explicitly states that multiple accounts are not permitted. Log in to your existing account, update your details if anything has changed, and register from there. Creating a second account can cause complications with your booking and registration.
Waiting Too Long to Book
The UCAT Consortium warns against booking late test dates specifically because problems with late bookings are harder to resolve. If you book close to the 24 September deadline and then need to reschedule — due to illness, a scheduling clash, or anything else — there may be no remaining slots available within the testing window. Rescheduling is subject to availability, which shrinks as the window closes. Book in July or early August wherever possible.
Trying to Cancel or Reschedule by Email
This one catches people out regularly. The UCAT Consortium is explicit: you cannot cancel or reschedule your test by email. Changes must be made online through your UCAT account, or by phone to Pearson VUE Customer Services after the booking deadline. If you send an email expecting your booking to be changed, it won't be — and you may miss the 24-hour notice window as a result.
Remote Testing (OnVUE) Without Meeting the Requirements
If you're sitting the UCAT via online proctored testing (OnVUE) — available in limited circumstances for candidates where travel to a test centre is genuinely difficult — there are strict technical and environmental requirements you must meet. This includes a system compatibility check, a suitable private space, and compliance with the test rules throughout. If you fail to meet these requirements on the day, you will be unable to sit the test, and your fee will not be refunded. If you're considering OnVUE, read the UCAT Consortium's specific guidance carefully before booking, and run the system test well in advance.
What to Expect on Test Day ✅
A quick checklist so nothing catches you out:
✔️ Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time
✔️ Bring your valid photo ID (exactly as registered)
✔️ Bring your booking confirmation (printed or on your phone)
✔️ Leave notes, books, phones, smartwatches, and large bags outside the test room (lockers are provided)
✔️ Get a good night's sleep and eat something beforehand
You'll be given a whiteboard and a marker for rough working. No personal items are allowed into the testing room itself. Familiarise yourself with the UCAT test rules and Fitness to Test Policy on the UCAT website before your appointment — all candidates are expected to know these in advance.
After Booking: What Happens Next?
Start or Step Up Your Preparation
The UCAT Consortium offers free, official preparation materials including question tutorials and practice tests at ucat.ac.uk. These are the most accurate reflections of the real test and should form the foundation of your revision.
Your Results
You'll receive your UCAT score immediately after completing the test. The UCAT Consortium will then deliver your results directly to your chosen UK universities in early November 2026 — ahead of the UCAS deadline on 15 October 2026. You should use your score to help inform your university choices before submitting your UCAS application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register for the UCAT before applying through UCAS?
Effectively, yes. The UCAT testing window closes before the UCAS deadline, so you need to have sat the test before you submit your application. Registration opens in May, booking in June, and testing runs until 24 September — well before the 15 October UCAS deadline.
What if I've sat the UCAT in a previous year?
If you're a returning candidate, you sit the UCAT again in the standard way. There's no penalty for sitting in multiple years. Visit ucat.ac.uk/register/returning-candidates for specific guidance if this applies to you.
Can I sit the UCAT if I'm an international student?
Yes. The UCAT is available in over 130 countries via Pearson VUE test centres. Test fees outside the UK are £115. In exceptional circumstances (distance, conflict, natural disaster), online proctored testing (OnVUE) may be an option — check the UCAT website before booking.
What if I register but decide not to apply to Medicine?
You can cancel your booking. If you give at least 24 hours' notice, you'll receive a refund. There's no obligation to send your score to universities.
Can I use the UCAT website itself for preparation materials?
Yes — and you should. The Consortium provides free official practice tests and question tutorials at ucat.ac.uk. These are always the most reliable sources, as content and scoring can change year to year.
Final Thoughts
UCAT registration and booking aren't complicated — but they are unforgiving. Deadlines are fixed, slots are limited, and there's no second chance in the same cycle if something goes wrong. 🎯
