Why should you attend our medicine clinical work experience placements?
Medical schools require applicants to have an insight into working as a doctor in the NHS, even during the COVID19 pandemic π
They want you to be aware of (and have some) of the skills and qualities required to be a doctor and study 5 years through a tough medical programme π
It is not satisfactory to just observe healthcare being delivered, but to also reflect and talk about your own experience πͺ©
Dr. Mannan and Dr. Khan supervise and provide pastoral care to all students in person during the placement π We do not compromise on the quality of your training.
The patients you will see will be from our own NHS practice (with consent) and will be chosen to offer you challenging cases just like you will see at medical school π
We bring all our surgery equipment and the patients to you in a COVID19 safe environment π· We bring our own NHS GP Surgery and patients to you.
We will provide students a certificate of attendance following successful completion of the placement π
What do you teach on the medicine work experience placement?
You will learn patient clinical history taking, communication and diagnostic skills. Teaching mirrors Years 1 and 2 at medical school π£
You will see patients with diseases that cover respiratory medicine, cardiology, oncology (cancer care) and paediatrics π«
We will then ask you to be the doctor and start the consultation with the patient. You will come to a management plan in partnership with your patients π Not every patient will want to go to hospital β οΈ You might also have to take a history from a mother or relative.
You will decide what diagnostic tests you want to do (these could include blood pressure readings, oxygen saturation and arranging an ECG) and interpret them π§ͺ
We will teach you any cardiology, anatomy, pharmacology, or any other clinical knowledge you may need to help treat your patient π
We will also teach you medical ethics and good medical practice guidance from the General Medical Council.
You will need to provide holistic care to your patients. Donβt forget the caring side of medicine!
Once you have seen your patient, you will need to write an accurate clinical entry in the medical records πΎ
The clinical experience is hands on on both days. We expect all students to engage with the tutor and other students as part of a simulated medical team β οΈ There are no boring lectures.
What practical skills and experience will I gain from the medicine work experience?
We pack your placement with medical and surgical practical skills that you can use in your medical school application as well as in real life βοΈπ©Ό
We provide full training on Basic Life Support (BLS) on our weekend placements in Manchester β‘οΈ We bring all our manikins and resuscitation training equipment. Learn how to resuscitate an unresponsive adult and how to respond in emergency scenarios.
If you are on a virtual placement, we will teach you the skills and then practice using clinical case based discussions rather than on clinical equipment.
We teach you basic surgical training skills including suturing. This is done with the same methods we use with doctors, with real sutures and simulated wounds π·
You will also learn about and undertake practical tasks such as phlebotomy (how to take bloods samples) as well as learn about how to use medical diagnostic equipment (such as stethoscopes, pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitoring) π©Έπ
We will provide full PPE (masks, gloves, aprons) and infection control measures will be in place β£οΈ
We will provide and incinerate all disposables and sharps after the placement π₯ Students must adhere to our infection control protocols.

π We are open and transparent. We have posted photos of our previous experience days (pre COVID) and testimonials from previous students who have come to our courses.

π©Ί It covers the cost of the patients giving their time up for you to practice with them, as well as any extra doctors we may need to hire to teach you.
