Applying to Study Medicine at a Russell Group University – Does this matter?

Medical schools often ask in interviews why you applied to that University. Should you respond ‘because it’s in the Russell Group’?

The Guardian newspaper has an article on perceived prestige at universities. You will often be asked in medical school interviews why you have applied to that particular school. There are several ways to answer this question, some of them academic, others more social. I was asked about this when I applied to Manchester. I started talking about shopping in the Arndale Centre, restaurants in Rusholme and what this excellent, vibrant city had to offer students.

We cover this question in detail on our Medical School Interview Course. We also discuss what it means to be part of the ‘Russell Group’ and whether using this as a positive example is going to favourable.
